Last-Gen Wheel May Be Compatible With Gran Turismo Sport

Gran Turismo Sport is coming on 15 Nov 2016, to enjoy the full experience playing a racing sim, a complete steering wheel set is a must. The GT Sport Official Steering Wheel by Thrustmaster was announced for PlayStation 4, but many GT fans who already owned the last-gen PlayStation 3 steering wheel set, wondering whether the old peripherals are compatible with GT Sport.

Kazunori Yamauchi stated:

“We plan to continue supporting PS3 wheels, but we also launched new wheels and we hope you’ll buy them.”

Understand that technology evolves in both hardware and software to provide a better experience, however require another investment on the peripheral, especially GT fans who already has a decent last-gen wheel, it could be quite inconvenient for them. Hopefully the wheel manufacturers  and Polyphony Digital are able to expand the compatibility list.

Gran Turismo Sport – FIA Digital License Early Details

Gran Turismo Sport – FIA Digital License Early Details

The GT Sport’s FIA Digital License is an interesting announcement by Polyphony Digital, in partnership with the FIA, a new type of racing license sanctioned by the FIA and local governing bodies of motorsport in countries around the world.

The FIA Digital License is required to go racing in any FIA-sanctioned Online Championship in Gran Turismo Sport. While asking Kazunori Yamauchi on how to obtain the License in the game, he stated that the details are still not finalized, due to the discussions with the FIA are still ongoing.

however the current tentative conditions to obtain the FIA Digital License are as follow:

  • Completion of GT Sport’s “Racing Etiquette Mode”, which includes guides and tests on the following:
    • Signals
    • Flags
    • Safety Car protocols
    • Cautions
    • Proper driving conduct and etiquette
  • To achieve “silver” or better results in all of GT Sport’s “Campaign Mode” events
  • Maintain a certain level of Driver Class and Sportsmanship Points

Drivers may be need to pay an annual license fee to the governing body of motorsport in their country, not to Polyphony Digital, but to FIA or the local motorsport club. This also requires the country’s local motorsport organization to participate and collaborate to the program. Major territories like the United States, Canada, Germany, France, and Japan have yet to be confirmed, although Kazunori re-assured that they are working hard to bring more local governing bodies into the program.

This brand new approach will bring virtual/digital online racing to an all new level, with the backing of International Racing Organization like FIA, by applying the same requirements and regulations from the real world motorsport to virtual/digital online racing. In sometime future, you can be a real Professional Racing Driver or Virtual/digital Professional Racing Driver, or even both.

Gran Turismo Sport’s – Advanced Matchmaking System & Sportsmanship Points

Gran Turismo Sport’s – Advanced Matchmaking System & Sportsmanship Points

Racing online is the main key features of GT Sport, thus the online Matchmaking system plays a very important role to run every competitive session clean, stable, and fair.  Due to various differences of skill levels, driving attitudes/manners, and network speeds, Polyphony Digital introduces Advance Matchmaking System and Sportsmanship Points to solve these problems. A reputation system which will be used to match players of similar skill and maturity levels.

Kazunori Yamauchi explained that the GT Sport’s driver rating system will be based on Driver Class and Sportsmanship Points:

Driver Class Rating

The driver’s overall racing speed and performance in every race events, the ratings will be grouped by letter (S-A-B-C-D-R), presumably be measured by ranged numerical value. The ratings will be calculated based upon qualifying results, race results, and the average rating of the drivers you’re racing against.

Sportsmanship Points

The driver’s behavior and manners on-track, if you drive like a maniac and your Sportsmanship Points goes down, you will only be matched with other players who drive in the same manner. So if you have clean rating, you will be matched with other clean drivers. Sportsmanship Points will be calculated on additional metrics which can either increase or decrease your overall rating:

Factors For Increase

  • Race distance
  • Course difficulty
  • Race category

Factors For Decrease

  • Driving off-track
  • Wall contact
  • Entering restricted zones
  • Ignoring flags
  • Ignoring speed limits
  • Pushing other cars off the track
  • Collisions with other cars

All of these scoring systems will affect the driver’s over rating and matchmaking outcomes during the play, under such rating system will educate players with the “consequences” of online racing, which will even lead to high level of online competitive racing experience.
